  1. New Acorn / Apple Alliance Means No Limits To Learning
  2.  - Xemplar Education Limited Opens For Business -

  4. Cambridge, UK - 2nd April 1996 - Xemplar Education Limited, the joint   
  5. venture company formed by Acorn Computer Group and Apple Computer to   
  6. develop information technology solutions for the UK education market and   
  7. dedicated to transforming the UK's approach to IT in education, will   
  8. begin trading today.  The new company aims to provide the widest choice   
  9. of educational IT solutions for UK schools.

  11. Xemplar Education is headed by Brendan O'Sullivan, previously Managing   
  12. Director of Apple Computer Ireland, and employs 63 staff.  The new   
  13. company is jointly owned by Acorn Computer Group and Apple Computer UK.   
  14.  Acorn's Managing Director, David Lee, is Chairman of the board.

  16. Brendan O'Sullivan said: "Both Acorn and Apple have impressive   
  17. credentials in the education marketplace.  Acorn is the most experienced   
  18. supplier in the UK with by far the largest user base, while Apple is part   
  19. of an international corporation with a track record as the largest   
  20. supplier to education worldwide.  Together, we have the skills base, the   
  21. resources and the commitment to remain the leading IT supplier in UK   
  22. education."

  24. The new company will support all existing Acorn and Apple solutions and   
  25. will continue to sell a wide range of appropriate learning technologies   
  26. including Acorn's award winning Risc PC, A7000, Pocket Book, set-top   
  27. boxes, PC-based school administration and Power PC-based SchoolServer   
  28. products - under the Acorn brand.  In addition, Xemplar Education will   
  29. sell Apple's award winning Power Macintosh, Performa, PowerBook   
  30. notebooks, Workgroup Servers, Imaging and Newton products - under the   
  31. Apple brand.  A priority of the new company is to bring out products and   
  32. technologies which increase the inter-operability of RISC OS and Apple   
  33. technology.

  35. Ian Carter, Head of IT, Cheltenham College, Gloucestershire, comments:   
  36. "Apple has great products and many exciting ideas; Acorn is good at   
  37. providing support to schools and offering them stability.  If the new   
  38. company resulting from this joint venture combined all these vital   
  39. elements, it simply can't lose - and neither can its customers."

  41. Jeanne Hughes, The Ryde School, Hatfield, Hertfordshire said: "It will be   
  42. a tremendous advantage if, in the future, you did not have to think about   
  43. which bit of software went in which computer.  Information technology is   
  44. increasingly important as a tool for learning.  A company that promises   
  45. to come up with solutions that will help us integrate technology into   
  46. learning has got to be a good thing."

  48. David Eccles, senior manager, Sherston Sofware, said: "We are pleased   
  49. about the Apple/Acorn joint venture because of late we had taken the   
  50. decision to develop more of our software on Macintosh anyway. At the   
  51. moment we're investing in an extension of our existing authoring system,   
  52. with the aim of producing applications that run on both platforms   
  53. simultaneously."
